Roles are useful because they describe what a slot actually contributes. They become misleading when they are treated as permanent labels attached to a species instead of jobs created by the set, the team, and the matchup.
A role belongs to the set, not the Pokédex entry
Words like wallbreaker, pivot, cleaner, remover, setter, revenge killer, and defensive check are shortcuts. They help people talk about teams quickly, but they are not fixed identities. The same species can play completely different roles with a different item, EV spread, move set, or Tera choice.
That sounds obvious until a familiar Pokémon is added to a team and mentally assigned its usual job even though the set does something else. Always read the four moves and the stats in front of you. If the set cannot perform the job you are counting on, the role exists only on paper.
Separate the job that must work from the extra utility
Most good slots do more than one thing. A bulky pivot can also remove hazards. A fast attacker can revenge kill and provide emergency priority. A setter can spread status or knock items while creating hazards. This kind of compression is one of the reasons a six-slot team can cover so many needs.

This is where a role map helps more than a generic team score. Write the critical jobs down and mark how many members can perform each one with the sets they actually have. You do not need a complicated chart. Even a short list can reveal when one slot is overloaded.
Use analyzer facts as a second layer

Before accepting a change, ask one blunt question: can this slot still do its primary job? If the answer is no, treat the change as a larger redesign, not a minimal repair. Run the analyzer to collect facts, then interpret those facts against your own role map. If a finding points to low speed, check whether speed control is already part of another role.
