EVs, IVs, and natures are easiest to understand as tools for reaching a job-specific stat target. A spread becomes much easier to evaluate when you know what each important number is trying to accomplish.
Begin with the job, then choose the numbers
A spread should serve the role of the set. A fast utility Pokémon might need enough Speed to move before a particular tier, then place the remaining EVs into bulk. A wallbreaker may simply want maximum damage because its job is to force progress immediately. A defensive piece may care about surviving a certain category of hit more than moving first.
Starting from the role prevents decorative complexity. A complicated EV spread is not automatically better than a simple 252/252 spread. If the extra numbers do not correspond to useful thresholds, they are just harder to remember.
Treat EVs as a budget with opportunity costs
EVs are finite. Points moved into Speed are points that cannot remain in HP or an attacking stat. That sounds basic, but it is the heart of spread design. Every gain should be worth what it gives up.
When you change a spread, write down the purpose of the change in one sentence. “These EVs reach my chosen speed floor” is useful. “This is the spread everyone uses” is not a reason unless you understand what the original author was benchmarking.

Look at the resulting stat rather than the nature name alone. Two sets with the same nature can land at very different numbers because of EVs, IVs, and level.
